Understanding Rolex serial-number eras

Rolex used sequential numeric case serials for much of the twentieth century, reset the sequence during the 1950s and introduced letter prefixes around 1987. Beginning around 2010, randomized eight-character serials removed the public connection between a serial and production year. Consequently, newer Rolex watches cannot be dated using the serial alone.

Lower numeric serials can produce two possible periods because of the historical reset. This calculator reports that ambiguity instead of selecting a false exact date.

Rolex serial number FAQs

Can a Rolex serial number reveal the exact production date?

No. Older serial ranges provide an approximate production year, and cases may have been completed or sold later.

Why can one numeric Rolex serial have two possible dates?

Rolex reset its numbering during the 1950s, causing some lower serial ranges to overlap with much earlier watches.

Can an eight-character modern Rolex serial be dated?

Generally no. Rolex introduced randomized alphanumeric serials around 2010, removing the public year sequence.

Where is the Rolex serial number located?

Older watches usually have it between the lugs at 6 o’clock. Later examples may show it on the rehaut inside the crystal.
