What these tools can tell you

Designer date codes and serial systems can reveal useful production information, but each brand uses a different method. Our calculators apply the correct historical rules for the selected brand and clearly explain when the result is exact, approximate, ambiguous or unavailable.

1Choose the brand

Open the calculator designed for that brand’s specific coding system.

2Enter the visible code

Use the stamp, sticker or case serial found on the item itself.

3Check the result

Compare the estimate with the item’s model, materials and provenance.

Prefer a visual reference? Our complete Hermès Date Stamp Guide for 1945–2026 shows plain letters, circled stamps, squared stamps and the modern sequence. A high-resolution saveable image is included for phone users.

Why some modern codes cannot be decoded

Chanel’s newer alphanumeric metal plates, Louis Vuitton’s embedded chip system and Rolex’s randomized modern serial numbers are not public year codes. The relevant calculator will identify these formats and explain the next best source rather than generating an unreliable date.

Designer code calculator FAQs

Can a serial number prove a designer item is authentic?

No. These calculators estimate production details only. Authentication requires the complete item, its construction and provenance to be assessed.

Are the calculators free?

Yes. The four date-code and serial-number tools are free to use and require no account.

Why do some calculators return a date range?

Brands often used series across overlapping production periods, and most did not publish exact public tables.

Reference only: These tools do not authenticate products. A plausible code can appear on a counterfeit, while genuine vintage items may have worn, missing or unusual markings.
