How to read a Louis Vuitton date code
Check interior tabs, pocket seams, D-ring tabs and linings.
Letters identify a factory; digits encode the production period.
The country result should be considered alongside the “Made in” stamp.
Louis Vuitton date code formats by era
For 1990–2006 codes, the first and third digits form the month while the second and fourth form the year. From 2007, the same positions identify the production week and year. Early-1980s codes usually place the year first and month last. Around March 2021, visible date codes began giving way to embedded chips.
Can you scan a newer Louis Vuitton chip?
An NFC-capable phone can sometimes detect a compatible tag and show technical information such as the tag type or identifier. Detection does not decode Louis Vuitton’s private production record and does not authenticate the item. Results also vary by phone, tag type and chip location.
Safety note: use the app’s read function only. Do not write to or modify any detected tag. A scan result is not proof of authenticity.
Louis Vuitton confirms that its leather goods are produced in France, Spain, Italy and the United States. Historical reference lists also associate certain accessory codes with Switzerland and Germany.

Louis Vuitton date code FAQs
Is a Louis Vuitton date code a serial number?
No. It is a production code shared by items made at a particular factory and time; it is not unique to one bag.
What do the Louis Vuitton letters mean?
The letters identify a factory location associated with a manufacturing country. Some codes have been used in more than one country.
Why does my newer Louis Vuitton bag have no date code?
Louis Vuitton moved away from visible date codes around 2021 and began using embedded chips. A phone may detect some tags, but it cannot decode Louis Vuitton’s private production record or authenticate the bag.
Does a valid LV date code prove authenticity?
No. A plausible date code can also appear on a counterfeit item.
